Federer Defeats Sandgren In Five Sets – Australian Open 2020

Roger Federer has defeated Tennys Sandgren in the quarterfinals of the 2020 Australian Open after saving seven match points. The Swiss superstar overcame the American in five close sets, winning 6-3, 2-6, 2-6, 7-6 (8) 6-3 in three and a half hours on the Rod Laver Arena show court.

Federer had his hands full, he was playing an in-form opponent who was full of confidence coming into the quarterfinal, Sandgren hit 27 aces and won 79% of points on his first serve, not only that but he managed to hit 73 winners past his 38-year-old opponent.

“I didn’t deserve this one, but I’m standing here and I’m obviously very happy.”

Twenty-time grand slam champion Federer was not at his best but done enough to win the big points during the final two sets. He only managed to hit 5 aces in the contest and made 56 unforced errors, a stat he’ll be sure to look at closely before his semi-final against either Novak Djokovic or Milos Raonic.

Federer did look good when he approached the net, winning 47/70 (67%) of the points.

“You have to get lucky sometimes, I tell you that!” Federer said afterward.

“Those seven match points are not in my control. I was just hoping that maybe he was not going to smash the winner. If he misses one or two, who knows what he is thinking about. He played his match and I got lucky. As the game went on, I found my rhythm and the pressure eased off.

“I didn’t deserve this one, but I’m standing here and I’m obviously very happy.”

Can Federer win his 21st Grand Slam down under?
