Sofia Kenin Wins 2020 Australian Open

American Sofia Kenin has defeated Garbine Muguruza of Spain 4-6 6-2 6-2 in the 2020 Australian Open women’s singles final.

The 14th seed, Kenin was in her first Grand Slam final and held her nerve to come back from losing the first set to win her maiden grand slam title down under.

“I want to say my dream has officially come true

Kenin saved 10/12 break points against her (83%) and managed to convert 5/6 (83%) of her own break points to establish a firm lead in sets two and three.

Speaking after lifting the plate:

“This is my first speech, but I am going to try my best. I want to congratulate Garbine on a great match, I am sure we will have more great finals in the future.

“I want to say my dream has officially come true! I cannot describe this feeling, it’s so emotional, I am so grateful to stand here – dreams come true, so go for it, if you have a dream it is going to come true.

“It is such an honor and privilege to be here. Thank you so much. I would like to thank the crowd, this past two weeks has been the best of my life!

“And last but not least, my team, my dad, thank you for making this possible – I can’t believe we are here today, we worked so hard. My mum, back home probably watching, so I love you mum! We really worked hard and I am so grateful for this. Thank you so much.”
